Top Five Men's Beach Wear Trends 2012

If you're bored of boring blue Bermudas and want to sport something a bit snazzier on the beach this year then you’ll need to invest in some high-quality and trendy beach-wear from the latest collections. But what are the five essential items for every man’s wardrobe this summer?

Short Board Shorts

Board shorts have been a popular mens swimwear choice for years but if you want to update the look then choose a shorter length. This style works well if you're on the shorter side as more of your leg is exposed, which has a lengthening effect.

If you've got chunky thighs avoid this look as the shorts will stop at the thickest part of your thigh, making it look even thicker.

Retro Trunks

Thanks to shows like Mad Men, the retro 1960s look is everywhere and retro trunks are very hot for summer 2012. The fitted 1960s look is perfect for tall, athletic figures. Go for bold and bright patterns to really make a statement or stick to plain colours for a more subtle style.

Floral Prints

Believe it or not, floral prints for men are big news this season and you can tap into the trend with a pair of floral shorts. If you don't have the confidence to carry off pastel pinks and baby blues then go for a monochrome floral print which will look chic and stylish whether you're sunbathing or hitting the bars.

Acid Brights

More and more men are saying no to boring blacks, blues and browns and replacing them with acid brights. Thanks to another resurgence of the 80s look, acid colours are everywhere. Try electric blue, shocking pink or sunny yellow if you really want to stand out from the crowd this summer.

Smart and Tailored

Thanks to the availability of a host of great fabrics that dry quickly you can comfortably wear tailored shorts on the beach. When shorts are tailored they have more structure so they're ideal for supporting a bit of a paunch and can make your legs look slimmer and longer.

If you've got very long legs then choose a mid-thigh short, which will balance you out. If you want to look taller, opt for shorts that stop just below the knee.

Tailored shorts are versatile enough to be worn on the beach and when you're out and about, and are really easy to dress up or dress down.
